As Karo carries you over the moon drenched landscape, his strong arms cradle you. You feel light as a feather, and this whole method of flight is every bit as wondrous as you hoped it might be. You steady yourself against him as you peer down at the lavender clouds. The wind twists and curls about you, ruffling your hair and clothes. How alive and free you feel here! What a glorious experience.
Karo’s wings beat with a powerful rhythm. The vrooshing rush of his wings fills the air.
“You know, you’re pretty good at this flying thing.” As soon as the words leave your mouth, you feel awkward and wish you could have come up with something wittier.
Karo gives you a warm smile, chuckling with his deep rumbling voice. “Good thing I am if I’m going to be flying us into battle.”
True, true.
That sharp scent of ozone returns, complete with notes of blood, iron, stone, and sulfur. Down below you see the dark lake with the brilliant pink portal glowing in its center on the little stone island. Spindly trees stand at attention like skinny sentinels, dark shadows stretching out like coiling arms.
Down below you can see dozens and dozens of monsters. They are weaving among the shadows and trees, advancing out of the portal from the abyss.
But you’re not too late!
You’re here now!
And the call has gone out. All of your allies from your quests are here, and oh, what a troop you have assembled!
At the edge of the fray on a cracked stone ledge, Beatrice stands tall. She heaves explosive pumpkins over the edge with childish glee and audacious laughter. The pumpkins whistle through the air before erupting in spectacular displays, scattering fiery destruction in their wake and setting monstrous figures ablaze.
Opal and Hugo flank her, both summoning up great columns of magical smoke. While Hugo weaves these into an intricate tapestry of illusions and duplicates, Opal paints runes into the air and summons up weapons of pure energy. Together they flank and draw in the enemy so that Beatrice can bash them with flaming explosive pumpkins.
At the water’s edge, Indigo lunged and attacked. He melted back and forth from his human to his wolf form. His long claws glinted in the silver moonlight. Each transition was a strategic shift, maximizing his claws and fangs and weapons in a seamless demonstration of ferocity and cunning.
On the other side of the lake, advancing steadily toward the water’s edge and the portal, Bram and Lyria send out a spray of magical bullets from their machine guns. The steady rhythm of their fire punctuated the chaos of the night’s battle.
Durak, towering above them, waded along the water’s edge, his great axe cleaving through monsters as he helped break the path for Bram and Lyria. He bellowed with each arc of his axe. Kya darted in with dancer’s grace on the other side. Her sword was a streak of silver that sliced through the air. Every step was measured, each stroke calculated.
Karo sets you down at the water’s edge and then battles with his own blade while you fight with yours.
The monsters keep pouring out of the portal, their dark forms writhing and twisting in the flickering light of the battlefield. But you and your allies stand firm, your weapons glinting in the moonlight as you face the onslaught.
With a roar, you leap into the battle and fight with all your strength. Forward you and your allies press.
It is an incredible fight.
Your weapon cuts as clean a path as Zen’s daggers and horns. Hugo’s smoky magic sets up critical strikes. Opal’s sorcery bolsters your defense, Beatrice’s fiery pumpkins clear your path, Indigo’s ferocity keep your flanks safe, Bram and Lyria’s covering fire give you room to maneuver as they move steadily forward, Durak’s and Kya’s strikes sure, true, and strong. Karo rained down blows and attacks from above and the side, swirling and dancing through the air.
And then at the edge of the battle, a familiar white-haired woman darted out from the shadows. Oh yes! You recognize her at once. That woman who may or may not be a vampire.
She certainly seems to be acting like a vampire right now. She just grabbed up a monster and bit down on its neck, killing it with a single bite. As she casts the corpse aside, she gives you an amused glare. “Inconclusive!” It’s as if she guessed your thoughts just based on that look. And then she pounces on the next monster.
With a shake of your head and a faint laugh, you resume your own fight.
The battle continues. You fight alongside your allies as you become the heroes crafting legends in this dark night.
With Karo’s help, Bram and Lyria advance the rest of the way to the island where the portal glows, ready for the last stage of the ceremony to bolster the wards and seal up the cracks. They cast the list of new books to read into the pulsing light.
With a resounding crack, the abyss seals shut. The pink light vanishes. In its place lie stories and art prints that you can take with you. So many treasures for you and your allies!
Bram sets his gun on his shoulder and chuckles. “Well, would you look at that.”
Lyria picks up a couple of the books and nods with satisfaction. “I’ll certainly be reading one of these tonight.” She hands the others out to the other adventurers who have come to help, and her gaze falls on you. She grins. “Come on, adventurer. Enjoy your spoils!”
What a delight this is! You step forward and pick up the first of your treasures. You also know what you’ll be reading tonight. And you absolutely cannot wait.
